Science Outreach – Athabasca presents…
Nature’s Waterworks: How Lakes and Rivers Function

Speaker: Dr. Robert Holmberg, Professor Emeritus, Athabasca University

Date: Tuesday, November 5, 2019

Time: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Place: Athabasca University Governing Council Chambers

Water is essential for our lives and livelihoods. Although lakes and rivers only contain about 0.0002% of the earth’s water, these water bodies supply much of our domestic and industrial needs as well as our recreational activities. This presentation will focus on the physical and biological forces that define how lakes and rivers change over time as well as how we can conserve these vital resources. Some aspects of groundwater, wetlands, and legal ownership will also be covered. Most examples will refer to the Athabasca River Basin.

If you want to know the importance and implications of such things as lake overturn, lake flushing, riparian zones, or oligotrophic versus hypertrophic, this is for you.
